Discover our standardized mass production solution for stainless steel, aluminum, iron, galvanized steel, and copper.

Metal Bonding Process

Bonding Characteristics & Dedicated Solutions

Addressing the unique inertness, oxidation, and surface energy challenges of six primary metal categories.

Stainless Steel

Stainless Steel (201/304/316)

Difficulty: Extremely smooth, strong molecular inertness. Conventional adhesives 100% fail.

Optimal: EAA high-adhesion film, modified TPU.

Process: Must lightly sand + degrease.

Aluminum Alloy

Aluminum Alloy & Profiles

Difficulty: Dense oxide layer causes false bonding; high thermal conductivity.

Optimal: TPU flexible film, PES weather-resistant film.

Applications: Profile wrapping, soft padding.

Iron Sheet

Cold-rolled Iron / Steel Plate

Difficulty: Prone to oxidation and rust. Adhesive hydrolysis causes delamination.

Optimal: PES water/weather-resistant film.

Advantage: Seals against air/moisture, prevents rust.

Galvanized Sheet

Galvanized / Aluzinc Sheet

Difficulty: Zinc layer is inert; high temp/pressure causes peeling and blackening.

Optimal: EAA low-stress high-adhesion film.

Taboo: Do not use high-temperature rigid adhesives.

Copper

Copper & Copper Alloy

Difficulty: Easily oxidizes forming patina, discolors at high temperature.

Optimal: TPU low-temperature flexible film.

Key: Low-temperature pressing to avoid discoloration.

Shaped Hardware

Shaped Hardware Parts

Difficulty: Curved surfaces, folded edges cause uneven pressure and edge lifting.

Optimal: TPU flexible film, high-elastic mesh.

Advantage: High elasticity conforms to complex shapes.

Surface Pre-treatment SOP

90% of metal bonding failures are due to inadequate surface treatment. Strictly follow these standards:

01

Degreasing (Mandatory)

Wipe thoroughly with industrial alcohol or degreaser – remove oil, fingerprints, mold release agents.

02

Roughening

Stainless steel: 200-240 grit. Aluminum/iron: 180 grit. Galvanized: very light sanding (do not damage zinc).

03

Clean & Dry

No dust, no water stains, workshop humidity ≤60%.

Production Red Lines

Strictly avoid these practices to ensure mass production yield and structural integrity.

  • Never bond stainless steel without sanding – will certainly delaminate.
  • Never process metal with oil, oxidation, or rust.
  • Never use high-temp/hardness adhesives on galvanized steel – causes zinc loss and blackening.
  • Never subject bonded metal to load or handling before full cooling.
  • Never use ordinary EVA for outdoor or humid applications.

Standardized Mass Production Parameters

Baseline parameters for equipment setup. Adjust based on specific metal thickness and thermal conductivity.

Adhesive Type Temperature Pressure Time Suitable Metals & Key Points
TPU Film/Mesh 110-130℃ 0.3-0.5 MPa 10-18 s Universal; first choice for curves; low temp prevents oxidation
EAA High-Adhesion 120-145℃ 0.3-0.5 MPa 12-20 s Dedicated for stainless & galvanized steel; ultra-strong adhesion
PES Weather-Resistant 140-160℃ 0.4-0.6 MPa 15-22 s Iron, outdoor metals; temperature & water resistant, rust-proof
PA Mesh 125-145℃ 0.3-0.5 MPa 12-18 s Metal soft padding breathable composites; blister prevention
POE Cross-Bonding 115-135℃ 0.3-0.5 MPa 10-18 s Metal + plastic dissimilar material composites

Flatbed Heat Press

Stepwise pressing, hold pressure during cooling. Metal conducts heat quickly; avoid local high temperature false bonding.

Roll-to-Roll Laminator

Uniform low pressure, stable feeding. Prevent stretching thin materials; avoid uneven cooling delamination.

Shaped Wrapping Machine

Progressive pressing, low-temp flexible process. Full air exhaust on curved surfaces; prevent edge hollow spots.

High-Frequency Production Problems & Solutions for Metal Bonding

Expert diagnostic and corrective strategies to ensure durable, high-performance adhesion in industrial manufacturing.

Production Problem Root Cause Corrective Solution
Metal bond peels completely with no adhesion Smooth surface not roughened, oil residue Sand & degrease; switch to EAA/TPU high-adhesion system
Initially strong, then later delaminates Poor hydrolysis/aging resistance of adhesive Replace with PES/TPU water/aging-resistant materials
Zinc layer peeling, blackening on galvanized steel High temperature/pressure + rigid adhesive stress Use EAA low-stress adhesive; lower temperature & pressure
Rusting, local blistering on iron after bonding Moisture ingress, poor adhesive sealing Use PES full-sealing film to block moisture; control humidity
Edge lifting, hollow spots on curved hardware Adhesive too rigid, poor conformability Switch to high-elastic TPU flexible film; stepwise exhaust pressing
Metal soft padding becomes stiff, poor hand feel Using rigid adhesive, excessive temperature/pressure Replace with TPU/PA flexible mesh; low-temp light pressure

Metal Bonding Production Red Lines

To guarantee structural integrity and prevent catastrophic delamination in industrial applications, the following operational guidelines are absolute and must be followed without exception.

Industrial Metal Bonding Process

Precision & Reliability

Engineered solutions for 15+ global industries.

01

Surface Preparation is Mandatory

Never bond stainless steel without sanding – skipping this step will certainly lead to delamination and complete bond failure.

02

Zero Contamination Tolerance

Never process metal with oil, oxidation, or rust. Surfaces must be chemically clean and structurally sound prior to adhesive application.

03

Galvanized Steel Compatibility

Never use high-temperature or high-hardness adhesives on galvanized steel. This improper pairing causes severe zinc loss and surface blackening.

04

Strict Curing Protocol

Never subject bonded metal to load, cutting, or handling before full cooling. Premature stress compromises the cross-linking and final bond strength.

05

Environmental Matching

Never use ordinary EVA or low-weather-resistance adhesives for outdoor or humid applications. Always select industrial-grade formulations matched to the environmental exposure.

Advanced Mass Production FAQs

Why does ordinary hot melt adhesive completely fail on stainless steel?
Stainless steel surface is dense, non-porous, with extremely low surface energy – no mechanical anchor points. Ordinary adhesives only stick superficially and peel entirely under stress. EAA/high-adhesion TPU system + surface roughening is absolutely required.
What is the biggest problem with galvanized steel bonding? How to avoid it?
The biggest problem is high temperature and high pressure causing the zinc layer to peel and the surface to blacken. The fixed solution is to use an EAA low-stress adhesive with a low-temperature/low-pressure process, which does not damage the coating structure.
Can metal bonds pass salt spray and high-low temperature cycle tests?
Yes. PES, TPU, and EAA materials can pass industrial salt spray, high-low temperature cycling, and moisture aging tests – fully meeting export quality standards.
Why does a metal bond delaminate after sitting for some time?
Usually due to insufficient hydrolysis/aging resistance of the adhesive, or delayed oil residue migration from the metal surface. Replace with a weather-resistant adhesive and strictly strengthen degreasing pre-treatment.
Is there a universal adhesive for all metals?
High-adhesion TPU film is the universal choice for all metals, suitable for most indoor, soft padding, and shaped metal applications. For extreme conditions, switch to EAA or PES as needed.
