Hot Melt Adhesion Mechanism with Wood

During hot pressing, the hot melt film/mesh melts from solid to viscous fluid, flows and wets the wood surface under pressure. Because wood has a natural porous structure (vessels, fiber gaps), the adhesive penetrates into surface pores and, upon cooling, forms physical anchor points (mechanical interlocking) while also creating polar adsorption with lignin and cellulose – achieving strong bonding.

Why does MDF and particleboard easily delaminate with ordinary hot melt adhesive?
MDF and particleboard are highly porous. Ordinary hot melt adhesive has low viscosity and penetrates too deeply, leaving insufficient adhesive on the surface (false bonding) and causing blackening. You must use thickened high-density PA mesh to seal pores, combined with high-viscosity adhesive for surface shaping.
How to quickly choose between film and mesh for wood bonding?
For large-area soft padding, porous board leveling, blister prevention, and breathability → choose mesh. For veneer wrapping, curved edge banding, moisture sealing, and gap sealing → choose film. For loose boards, a combination of mesh base + film top is best.
What to do if thin wood veneer easily stretches, deforms, or wrinkles?
Never use high-temperature/high-pressure processes on thin veneer. Switch to EVA ultra-low temp film, reduce temperature and pressure, shorten press time, and allow natural cooling. Avoid pulling or secondary high-temperature processing.
Can bonded wood products be used in humid kitchens or bathrooms?
